Did the m exodus of Israelites from Egypt ever happen in real life?

Apart from what's already been mentioned, the Egyptians had military posts all over where the Israelites supposedly wandered. A huge band such as the Israelites were supposed to have been would have never been out of sight of the Egyptians at any point, i.e., they wouldn't have actually escaped Egypt by crossing the Red Sea.
